Hello everyone.
This past week seven of our members attended the Gulf States Camera Club Councils convention in New Ibera Louisiana held by the Lafayette Camera Club. It was a blast.
Attending for us were:
David Gulledge, Dick Weddle, Shelia Bullock, Bob Bullock, Beacky Harris, Dean Harris and Buddy Hatchell (a honored past member).

The event was fantastic for many reasons but three stand out:
1. We had a wonderful time.
2. We had a chance to share knowledge and take pictures together.
3. Dick Weddle won 1st place in the PJ yearly competition.
Mac Temple won 2nd honorable mention in PJ yearly competition.

Fantastic news for us all.

Well by now everyone knows what a huge success the “End of the Year Banquet” was. Food was great, fellowship was great, speaker was great, friends were great, all that equals a great time.

Evening started off at 6:30 PM when people started showing up to look at all the images that placed during 2011. There are so many good images in our group. Then we all ate, the meal was so good I watched food and conversation shared by all. Then we got down to business. We was honored by the presence of Walt Grayson of “Mississippi Roads” fame, WLBT fame, DVD fame and books amany. Walt was our guest speaker and talked about photography and stories around his adventures. After Walt Mike Hataway spoke, Mike is a photography professor and graphics professor at Mississippi College. Mike, Guy Strickland and Dr. Miley were the judges for the year end competition and they had a tough job and pulled through so many good images to come up with the winners in each catagory. Next Guy Strickland a graduate student at Mississippi College spoke about the judging. By the way Guy had learned that day that he had been awarded top honors as a graduate student for the year. He is now teaching some at Mississippi College.

After the speeches it was awards time.

Very good meeting this past Monday night (13th).

Discussion on themes came up with three themes for this year (2012 competition) 1 print and 2 projected. List will go out in email for voting.

Discussion on one person shows at meetings to give members chance to show up to 10 images so everyone can see what that person is doing and make comments and the maker can explain their work. It was also brought up to have everyone that wanted to bring images one night to fill the main room so we can have a number of members showing their work in specific spaces. A multi member show. This is a wonderful idea so those that do not compete can show their work.

An award was given Tommy Dobbins for placing in a Gulf States Camera Club Council Competition:

Tommy Dobbins (left) receives Gulf States Award from David Gulledge

Competition was held for projected, here is a list of placements:
2nd – Clint Campbell – Help
4th – Dick Weddle – Columbia Ground Squirrel

Okay here we go with a discussion that comes up a lot and a possible response to help, maybe.
Time and again someone brings up competition and a level playing field or wheather we are a competiton club or a teaching club or a user club. I feel we have each of those types in our group and that is a plus. The question and discussion here is how do we strike a balance so everyone feels a part of JPS. I know competition nights some people don’t submit images due to they don’t think they could place or they feel their images might not be good enough to compete. I would like to impliment something that speaks to that. Would anyone be interested in the following:
—A member bringing 1-10 images matted to place somewhere in the meeting room or hall in kind of a one person one night show of their work so everyone could see what they do and ask questions and make comment to the maker if they so wanted. This might help someone who was looking for help wiThis would give the person that does not compete a outlet to show everyone what they do. If there were a lot of interest in this we could do it each meeting and not just the competition night. I think this is a step in a direction to show work outside of a competition setting. Please let me know what you think about this idea by putting a comment to this post.
Thanks

Okay, here we go again, this is an ongoing list that everyone can see and add to for photographic competition themes for 2012.
NOTE: It has been suggested that we have 4 theme competitions in January instead of 2, that would be 2 print and 2 projected. This can be discussed at the vote meeting if anyone objects. This would give 4 theme competitions and 6 open competitions.
Those listed to start (1-9 are from Becky Harris), to add yours just comment and I will move it up to the main list.
Added 10, 11, 12 to the list from Brandon Cartwright.
Added 13 and 14 to the list from Martha Ainsworth
Added 15 and 16 to the list from David Gulledge
Voting will take place at the next meeting which will be February 6th.
Stop by the blog often to see what has been added:

1. Macro (Nature) Close up photography – flora, fauna and mineral
2. Near and Far Object(s) in the image appear near (close to viewer as well as an object(s) that appear far away.
3. Moving Water, sense of movement with water such as a water fall, flowing river, crashing waves, water droplets, etc.
4. Night Photography, anything shot at night, indoors or out.
5. Public Lands (Nature) images from public lands, including senic flora and fauna.
6. Abandoned, abandoned buildings, cars, etc in rural or urban setting.
7. Wind, Weather and Storms, image demonstrating wind, clouds and weather.
8. Out of place, anything that is, well, out of place.
9. Different Point of view, self explanatory.
10. Multiple exposure photos done mostly or all in camera (no Photoshop layering). Some of the best that I’ve seen are from Dan Mountford. It’s unbelievable what he can do in camera.
11. Photo contest using a disposable single use camera. Everyone could get one of the cheap disposable cameras and shot whatever they want. Then pick your best 5-10 shots and judge them like the club did the scavenger hunt photos. It would be a great way to do basic photography and also challenging at the same time.
12. Macro photography of items that we see or use everyday, but through the use of macro photography you change the perception of what that item is or make it more interesting.
13. People of interest.
14. What ever you like. (This way everyone can submit something.)
15. Portraits which would include one self Portrait
16. Still Life
